For its 21st year, Academy of Art University has hosted another excellent fashion show. A part of the New York Fashion Week spotlight, a number of fresh new design graduates from the Academy of Art fashion made excellent showings with new runway collections. Guests such as America’s Next Top Model’s J Alexander and CFDA Director of Education and Professional Sara Kozlowski sat in attendance at Skylight Clarkson Square on September 9th while the event was live-streamed live online.

MFA and BFA graduates represented a variety of design aesthetics highlighting both tradition and progression. Two themes predominated, internationality and reinvention. Examples of presentations include Eden Slezin used a denim ensemble, showing off the tried and true with rubber bike tubes to add a spark to the environmental recycling movement. Saya Shen took inspiration from locations as diverse as Hokkaido and San Francisco to present a nature-themed ensemble, and Joanna Jadellah took inspiration from her Palestinian heritage, paying tribute to her family’s past with wool, leather, and cashmere.

Graduates presenting have already received accolades, with BFA of Fashion Design recipient Carlos Rodriguez being chosen for the CFDA Fashion Future Graduate Digital Showcase this year along with Dina Marie Lam, an MFA of Fashion Design also recognized as the BCBGMAXAZRIA Super Intern. It is reasonable to expect great things from these fresh graduates with the end of their 21st Academy of Art showcase. Anticipation begins for Academy’s 22nd iteration of the show in 2018.
